Louisville more like Boreafill

by Kevin

,
As the college football season nears its close two things are inevitable. The ubiquity of Lee Corso and debate over the innerworkings of the BCS ranking system. Seldom a year has gone by since its inception that has not been riddled with controversy and this year is no different. Should Louisville finish the season undefeated and the winner of Ohio State vs. Michigan as well, an interesting situation will arise.
Should anybody really be considering keeping Louisville, an undefeated team, out of the BCS championship game? Yes. Regardless of the fact that they have no losses on their records, the Big East simply cannot compete with the best teams in the nation. The fact they had, up until last week, 3 undefeated teams is irrelevant when you consider that the hardest competition they face all year is each other. Until teams like UConn, USF, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati break free of mediocrity, the chances of a team from the Big East making it to the BCS championship game are very slim. Of the non-conference games the Cardinals have played, none are currently ranked in the top 25. If Louisville were to be matched up against any other top 10 opponent (except West Virginia) they would be embarrassed. It is ludicrous to believe that they can compete with Ohio State and Michigan and it is insulting to talented one-loss teams like Florida, Texas, and Auburn to be put behind and inferior team.
It is widely accepted that the SEC is the best, toughest, and most deep conference in college football. To go through the SEC with one loss, and to ultimately win the championship, should put the team ahead of any undefeated team from a lesser conference. The Gators have had to play Tennessee, Auburn, and LSU who are all ranked in the top 15 and also held off a very good Georgia team. Auburn has also had to play an equally difficult schedule, with their one loss coming to Arkansas who is on the verge of entering the top 10. Texas would also serve as a better candidate to contend for the national championship because their only loss has come to number one Ohio State and have had to play a number of difficult opponents as well, like Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas A&M.
,
Not only would it be unfair to quality teams who deserve to be in the championship, it would be unfair to us, the college football fan, to have to watch an obviously underqualified team in Louisville getting trounced by a much better team. Hopefully in it's infinite wisdom the all mighty computer will provide us with a fair and entertaining championship game in January.

You forgot Syracuse in the ranks of the mediocre Big East. Also, I seem to remember a BCS bowl game last year when West Virginia gained over 500 yards and scored 38 points on a defensively great Georgia team. That WVU team is very much the same team that took the field and was trounced by Louisville. Exactly why can't Louisville compete?

Louisville beat Kentucky by 31, Florida beat Kentucky by 19. Kentucky is a possible SEC bowl team. There's a reason why SEC teams won't play Louisville. They'd lose.

Until they schedule a non-conference schedule that contains at least one big name team, like all of the other top teams in the country, i will not be convinced otherwise. The fact that Louisville has the ability to beat Kentucky by 12 more points does little to convince me they're better. Indiana beat Iowa, the same Indiana that lost to UConn. I can't fathom a universe where UConn would beat Iowa.

Syracuse took Iowa into double overtime and only lost because the offensive coordinator couldn't dial up a QB keeper in 7 POSSIBLE DOWNS to punch it in from the one yard line. It is very possible that UCONN could beat Iowa, because well, Iowa isn't very good this year. Anyways, does the depth of the conference matter all that much? Louisville and Rutgers are still undefeated, two of only 5 teams with such a record. Though I grant you that Florida has played a tougher schedule, only three teams on Louisville's schedule have losing records. They've played teams in major conferences, Kentucky, Miami, and Kansas State. Each of these teams has winning records. They also played Middle Tennessee State University, who is undefeated in conference play and will go on to play in a bowl. Even Temple is better than usual, with there one win. (By the way, that last sentence was a joke). Florida's out of conference schedule includes Southern Mississippi, Central Florida, and Florida State. Only Florida State will be a bowl team. Also, they play the Western Carolina Catamounts who have a record of 2-7... in I-AA. If the Big East is included in the BCS conferences, Louisville cannot be penalized for the lack of depth in the conference. Florida benefits from playing in the toughest conference in the country. But the SEC is no more of a BCS conference than the Big East. I'd venture to say that the Big East is the third toughest conference this year, ahead of the Pac-10, Big 12, and ACC, and only slightly behind the Big 10. So why not Louisville? Louisville is an exciting team to watch, and have a large fan base. We cannot penalize an undeafeted team from a BCS conference. Boise State can be left out of the champioinship because they do not have BCS affliliation. But Louisville does, will finish the season undefeated, and will compete in the national championship.

I know you leave Boise State in jest, but remember Utah a few years back? BSU is hurt by not being in a BCS affiliated conference. The Broncos will lose to either Texas or USC in the Fiesta bowl, but can never play in a championship game. Did I mention how much I love the BCS? Let's bring in a plus one game after the Rose Bowl and the Orange Bowl and leave the season with only one undefeated team.
Thank you,
Paul
